Comedy movies exist to make fun of people. Most of the time it's an actor playing a character who's at the brunt end of a joke, but oftentimes real people or places can find their way into the crossfire as well. Well, a new Netflix comedy Ibiza, starring Gillian Jacobs and Vanessa Bayer, and produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay, might find itself in trouble over some jokes that crossed the line.
The film takes place on the island of Ibiza. Located off the coast of Spain, Ibiza is known around the world for their incredible nightclub and party scene, and has become a tourist destination for people around the world. The film, however, was not shot in Ibiza, instead being shot partially in Barcelona and Croatia. Ibiza residents aren't happy about that, or how the film spoofs their culture.
"They tried to film the movie here and get the island to collaborate, but the Consel d’Eivissa gave them a firm NO after reading the script," local resident Guenolee Roger said to The Hollywood Reporter. "Because they felt that it was terrible PR for the island and totally opposite to the kind of tourism they are trying to encourage, which is more than just clubbing and partying."
It's to the point where the island is considering suing Netflix over their negative portrayal in the movie.
Getting spoofed isn't always a bad thing. Borat's release in 2006 eventually led to a higher amount of tourists visiting Kazakhstan because of the character.
