Sad news today for anyone who missed their original shot at become a Vine star, as Dom Hofmann, one of the original creators of Vine, has announced that the release date for his follow-up app, "V2," would be postponed indefinitely.
Vine originally met its demise in January of last year, when Twitter, who had purchased the app, decided they could no longer sustain the platform. Vine, despite being responsible for the creation of the widely-loathed "Vine star" celebrity archetype, became a bastion of creativity for young people, and helped create some of the funniest videos on the internet.
As such, there were many hopeful fans that V2 would be able to resurrect Vine's legacy, but it seems that this will no longer be the case. In a statement released on the V2 forums today, Hofmann states his reasoning behind stopping the project.
"When I announced that I was working on a follow-up to Vine, I also (perhaps foolishly) announced that it would be a personal project and personally funded," said Hoffman. "I underestimated the amount of enthusiasm and attention the announcement would generate."
He goes on to state that the incredible interest in the company would require a much higher level of investment than he could personally generate, and that investors would not appreciate Hofmann splitting his time between V2 and his other current projects.
"I’m very, very sorry for the disappointment," said Hoffman. "If it’s any consolation, I think it would have been even more disappointing if this service had been developed and released incorrectly, which is where we were headed. I’d like for us to get it right."
Hopefully they can get these issues sorted out, so Vine can finally make its well-deserved comeback.
