Mila J might not be given the credit Future was for releasing high quality music at an impressive rate, but her monthly EP releases have delivered some of the strongest R&B of the year. With January 2018, the first in the series, Mila began the year in a fragile place, singing sad songs over spare guitar arrangements. Exactly halfway through the year, the projects have grown gradually more optimistic, but still deal with the ins and outs of relationships with relatable intimacy. On "Without You," she opts for bright piano chords that hearken back to the 90s R&B she's worshipped on past projects, but her songwriting reaches far beyond a nostalgia trip. It may take all year for everyone to catch on, but they will eventually.
For now, check out June 2018 here and work your way back. It's worth your time.
Quotable Lyrics:
I could stare at the wall
I could watch a flower grow tall
Still that's better than fuckin' with you
I bet you think I don't know what to do
