Reality star Kim Kardashian is using her power for good by enlisting a high-power lawyer, Shawn Holley, to help a 62-year-old grandmother get released from prison, TMZ reports.
Alice Marie Johnson is currently serving life behind bars, without parole, for her first nonviolent drug offence. Alice has been in prison for 21-years and will die there unless she is granted freedom.
“I couldn’t find a job fast enough to take care of my family. I felt like a failure," Alice explains, via her Change.org petition run by her daughter. "I went to a complete panic and out of desperation I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money. I became involved in a drug conspiracy.”
In a letter obtained by TMZ, Alice expresses her gratitude to Mrs Kardashian West saying, "I was drowning and you have thrown me a life jacket and given me hope."
She explains how Kim's involvement in the case will go down in history as a "defining moment" the same way Rosa Parks "refused to give up her seat on that bus."
"She was an ordinary woman whose courage ignited and united the heart of America to stand together against a very present evil that could no longer be tolerated. This is so much bigger than either one of us. I believe that history will record that Kim Kardashian had the courage to take a stand against human warehousing and was a key figure in meaningful criminal justice reform becoming a reality," the letter continues. "A million trillion thanks!! May God’s blessing rest upon you and yours. THE BATTLE IS ON!"
Kim is also working to help free Cyntoia Brown, a woman who is sentenced to prison for killing a man who allegedly used her as a sex slave when she was 16.
