Charli XCX has been known for her candy-satisfying pop hits for more than five years now. On "5 In The Morning" she brings the same approach to a different style: trap. Although there's not a lyric to be heard about birds or the bando, almost everything about the song–from the beat (classic trap hi-hat and long, loud bass) to the type of autotune, to the Travis-Scott/Young Thug inspired ad-libs, to some of the lyrics ("I'm going all in/It's 5 in the mornin/Im busy baaalllin")–is trap-inspired. Although Charli has produced rap songs in the past, it would be hard for someone to watch this video and not describe the star of it as a rapper.
The video itself features XCX dancing and strutting around an empty warehouse, wearing all black. This, in line with the style of the song, is a departure for XCX, whose colour palette up to now consisted mostly of pink and whose most recent album was titled Pop 2.
"5 In The Morning" marks Charli XCX's first release since Pop 2 came out back in December and signals may be sort of statement of purpose for her new music and maybe a new album in the coming year.
