Chicago Bears tight end Zach Miller underwent emergency surgery on Sunday night in hopes of saving his injured left leg, according to a report by ESPN. Miller reportedly damaged an artery in his leg and the surgery was performed in New Orleans following the Bears' loss to the Saints.

The 33-year old veteran tight end suffered a dislocated knee during the third quarter while making what appeared to be an over-the-shoulder touchdown catch in the endzone. Officials later reviewed the play and ruled that Miller did not complete the catch, so the touchdown was wiped off the board but that was the least of Miller's concerns.

The Bears' medical staff rushed onto the field immediately after Miller's left leg but not even they could have been prepared for the severity of the injury. According to ESPN's Chris Mortensen, the dislocated knee is considered "more significant" than a regular dislocation, and vascular surgeons were called in in an effort to repair Miller's leg, which includes grafting tissue from his right leg to repair the damaged artery.

This was Miller's 8th season in the NFL. He was a sixth-round pick of the Jaguars in the 2009 NFL Draft, but joined the Bears before the 2015 season. For his career, he has 146 receptions for 1,631 yards and 15 touchdowns.

The Bears, 3-5, have a bye this week before returning to the field in Week 10 for a matchup against the Green Bay Packers at home.
