Gunplay has released his new project ACTIVE, the latest in a number of low-stakes releases after sharing his long-awaited debut album Living Legend through MMG and Def Jam in 2015. The tape features a mix of production, including tracks that sound like they could have come off of one of his early mixtapes and others that position him in a more modern, auto-tune-driven place. On "My Definition," he's in the cushy (or perhaps kushy) space somewhere between Rick Ross' luxury and the smoked-out textures of Curren$y, who just happens to be featured on the track. While the spacey record could easily encourage a zoned out, auto-pilot verse from any other rapper, Gunplay is tuned in and precise as ever, weaving multi-syllabic rhymes into a stylishly casual flow that hides just how impressively technical it is with its nonchalance. It shows that in some ways, Gunplay and Curren$y have a lot in common, and with the release of ACTIVE, the Miami rapper is one step closer to mirroring his collaborators approach to his releases -- regularly putting out mixtapes that are designed for core fans and core fans only. It can lead to a great catalog if done the right way, and if anyone can pull it off, it's Gunplay.
