Though Freddie Gibbs' Freddie album is chalk full of bangers front to back, one of the most immediate cuts is the brooding, tense "Automatic." Over a murky synthesizer that wouldn't sound out of place on SoundCloud, Gibbs allows his formidable mic skills to shine; "I'm gon spit on this shit, I don't got shit to prove," prefaces Gibbs, before the drums kick in. Rest assured that Freddie is a man of his word. For nearly two and a half minutes, Gibbs goes in over the Kenny Beats instrumental, living up to his "gangsta Gibbs" moniker with a series of merciless bars.
"I just put my monkey nuts on my chopper stick, might just knock of an arm off that chopper hits," he raps, "from my cuz in the pack and he just lost a brick, cut that n***a off like he a naggin' bitch." Nobody needs nagging in their lives. We can all learn a lot from Gibbs, in that regard.
Still, while Freddie runs the risk of flying under the radar, like You Only Live 2wice did last year, the real ones know that Freddie Gibbs never disappoints. It may still be early in its lifespan, but Freddie already feels like a worthy addition to one of the most consistent catalogs in the game.
Quotable Lyrics
I just put my monkey nuts on my chopper stick
Might just knock of an almond that chopper hits
From my cuz in the pack and he just lost a brick
Cut that n***a off like he a naggin' bitch
Got my house and whip and your bitch
And this drip on my neck and my wrist off that powder shit
