The famous author is waxing apologetic. .

Many fans of the wildly popular Harry Potter series were left heartbroken when Dobby, the beloved house elf, was unfortunately killed off. However, J.K. Rowling, the author behind the novels-turned-cinematic franchise, is paying tribute to the deceased mystical creature.

Early Wednesday morning, Rowling took to Twitter to lament Dobby's tragic passing, while also offering an apology to fans who were sad to see him go. "This year, I apologise for killing someone who didn’t die during the #BattleofHogwarts, but who laid down his life to save the people who’d win it. I refer, of course, to Dobby the house elf," the author wrote.

In the aftermath's of Dobby's death, many have took to social media to bemoan his exit from the series. "It was like being punched in the heart repeatedly 💔 Don’t trust anyone that didn’t cry about Dobby," grieved one Twitter user.

Another individual notes how "At first I didn't like Dobby, but I wish I could be more like Dobby, his death in book & on film always makes me cry," to which Rowling directly responded with "that answer really touched me, Anna."

Dobby was killed off in the 2007 novel Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange.
