In a recent interview with Vibe, former Haitian presidential candidate, and Fugees lead man, Wyclef Jean revealed the source of his and singer Lauryn Hill’s deteriorating relationship. Wyclef reveals that the two had an affair, and at the end of their tryst, Hill was deceitful about who the father of her unborn child was.
In preparation of his autobiography, "Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story", Wyclef talks about his and former Fugees co-hort, Lauryn Hill’s relationship, revealing that the two actually had a long-standing affair. When Hill became pregnant she initially led Wyclef to believe that he was the father. When it came out that the baby was actually Zohan Marley’s, Wyclef was crushed and could not forgive Lauryn.
In an excerpt, from HHDX, Wyclef says, “In that moment something died between us. I was married and Lauryn and I were having an affair, but she led me to believe that the baby was mine, and I couldn’t forgive that,” adding, “She could not longer be my muse. Our love spell was broken.”
This certainly adds some intriguing context to the music and lyrics from the Fugees back then, and also both Lauryn Hill’s and Wyclef’s solo projects.
