There has been much clamor about the lack of diversity within this year's class of Oscar nominees, but one black Canadian received a well-deserved nod, albeit for music and not acting. The Weeknd's "Earned It," released in December 2014 as the lead single to the "50 Shades of Grey" soundtrack, received a nomination for Best Original Song.
As is tradition, each of the nominees perform the song for which they're nominated, and The Weeknd's live rendition of "Earned It" made the song seem fit for a sexy Broadway musical. The stage was transformed into a luxury bondage chamber, and The Weeknd stood in the center surrounded by live violinists and burlesque dancers.
Check back here soon to see if Abel takes home an Oscar tonight. His competition includes Lady GaGa ("Til It Happens to You") and Sam Smith ("Writing's on the Wall").
