The highly talented Charlotte emcee known as WELL$ has released The Way I'm Living Makes My Mom Nervous, his first project since 2014's MTSYD: The Revenge of the African Booty Scratcher, which earned him a spot in our On The Come Up series. His new album is released via his Immaculate Taste label. The 11-track project includes the previously released tracks "Young Man" -- a collab with NC indie duo Sylvan Esso, the "98 Juvie" remix with fellow Charlottean Deniro Farrar, and "130," which he recorded at HNHH Studios.
Whereas WELL$' first project was written from the perspective of an African kid living in America, he says that The Way I'm Living Makes My Mom Nervous is "about how my American upbringing clashes with my African values," and more specifically, how his current career path is a rejection of what his African parents had envisioned for their son in America.
Aside from Metro Boomin, who produces on "Heaven's Door," all of the guest artists and producers are from the Immaculate Taste collective or are based in NC. The album is executive produced by WELL$ longtime collaborator Alec Lomami.
