Joey Purp is undoubtedly one of the most talented members of Chicago's vaunted Savemoney crew, but he hasn't enjoyed the shine of his crewmates Chance the Rapper and Vic Mensa, probably because he hadn't released a project in over three years... until Friday, when he delivered his highly-anticipated mixtape iiiDrops.
iiiDrops features appearances from Chance, Vic, Mick Jenkins, Saba, and theMIND. Production comes from Thelonious Martin, Knox Fortune, Smoko Ono, Ducko McFli, Garren (who produced "Smoke Break"), and more.
The tape is excellent, with funky beats, jazzy chords, and Purp's rare blend of humor, passion, vivid storytelling, and technical skill. Plus, he's a cool guy. HNHH ran into him down at SXSW earlier this year and asked him about his pony hair, leopard print Vans. "They're leopard print, so you can't really tell me nothing about my pimping," he explained.
Word. Listen to iiiDrops below. Prepare to be amazed.
