Katy Perry has announced the first special guest for her Super Bowl halftime show -- Lenny Kravitz.

There was  a time where Rihanna was being considered to do the halftime show at this year's Super Bowl, but unfortunately the NFL (as the NFL tends to do) totally blew it. Now, we've got what is not quite the next best thing, but is something, with Katy Perry taking the reins on the show.

After the nipplegate over-correction, which gave us a couple years of performances from artists who were too old to offend anyone, the NFL eventually got back to the current superstar format, enlisting the Black Eyed Peas, Madonna, Beyonce, and Bruno Mars for the last few events.

Perry continues in that tradition, and much like those that came before her, she'll be featuring a couple of special guests, announcing the first of which would be none other than Lenny Kravitz."My first special guest is going to be an incredible rock & roll icon, a guitar god," she told NBC. "He's the coolest!"

As far as whether they'll do a rendition of "American Woman" (possibly mashed up with "California Girls"?), Katy replied, "We'll See".

The "Dark Horse" singer still has a couple more guests to announce, one of which hopefully being Juicy J.

[Update: So Will Missy Elliott]

SPIN reports today that in addition to bringing out guest Lenny Kravitz during the Super Bowl half-time show, Katy Perry will also bring out Missy Elliott. The word is she'll be performing her 2002 hit "Work It" for the Super Bowl audience.

In a recent press conference, Katy Perry hinted at Missy joining her by referring to her as an "old school singer" and saying, "When you hear the first ring of the chord, I think jaws will drop and faces will melt."

Tune in on Sunday to watch the big game go down.

So the Super Bowl aired last night, and Katy Perry came through with a hit-filled performance, running through "Roar" and "Dark Horse", before reaching back to early jams like "Firework" and "Teenage Dream". Lenny Kravitz showed up to duet on "Kissed A Girl", possibly to take heat off the "controversial" (by NFL standards) concept of the song, while Missy Elliott had her own mini-set, hitting us with classics like "Work It", "Lose Control" and "Get Your Freak On".
