Halima Aden, a hijab-wearing Somali-American who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and was just signed by IMG will make her New York Fashion Week debut today at 3pm as part of Kanye West's Yeezy Season 5 show.
Diversity has been a common theme of previous Yeezy Season fashion shows but featuring Halima Aden after President Trump attempted to pass a Muslim ban makes this more of a political statement by Kanye who has publicly endorsed Trump in the past.
The 19-year old model first made headlines by wearing a hijab during Minnesota's Miss USA competition in November and then a burkini for the swimsuit portion.
According to Cosmopolitan, Halima Aden told Business of Fashion;
“I wanted to spread a positive message about beauty and diversity, and to show other young Muslim women that there is room for them."
Aden and the rest of the Yeezy Season 5 models will hit the runway soon, as Kanye's show is set to begin at 3pm EST.
