While Kanye West fans were probably pleased to hear that the artist had booked a last minute New York Fashion Week show for his Yeezy Season 5 line, it appears the fashion world isn’t quite so pleased.
Apparently when Kanye West booked his show for 5pm on February 15 he did not consult with CFDA, which oversees New York Fashion Week operations, including scheduling. The result is that Kanye’s Yeezy show is now schedule for the same time as Marchesa, a women’s dress designer. Going up against ‘Ye is not a good thing for Marchesa.
CFDA president Steven Kolb did not mince words when speaking to WWD about the show. “Once again, CFDA was not approached or consulted about the possibility Kanye West showing on the official New York Fashion Week Schedule,” he declared, referencing last year’s unscheduled show on Roosevelt Island.
“Not going through the proper channels is disruptive to the whole week and unfair to designers who have secured spots through the formal procedure,” Kolb continued. “This bad behavior is not acceptable to the CFDA and should not be tolerated by the industry. Because of this, the CFDA will not list Kanye West on the official schedule.”
The CFDA is willing to work with Kanye to find a proper time slot that doesn’t displace other designers. After many years of railing against the fashion industry for not letting him have a seat at the table, perhaps Kanye is indulging his penchant for pettiness.
