Rappers tend to assume a persona larger then themselves, one that is rich, good-looking, and invincible. On his new release "Scared," Jarren Benton inhabits the vocal charisma of this approach but inverts its emotional conceit. Benton pulls back the curtain to make himself appear anything but invincible -- he is plagued with self-doubt and a pervasive fear of nearly everything. By baring his vulnerability for all to see, he perhaps hopes to come to terms with it.
"Scared" is produced by The Coalition and features OnCue & Big Rube. It will appear on Benton's forthcoming project Slow Motion Vol. 2, due out July 22.
Quotable Lyrics
I'm scared
But I ain't scared of none of y'all fuck niggas
I'm scared of getting my heart broken
I'm sorry, that's why I don't fuck with ya
I'm scared of love
I'm scared of pain
I'm scared of music
I'm scared of fame
I'm scared of fucking my kids up psychologically
Now who's to blame?
