The film centered around seminal gangster rap group N.W.A is underway. It was officially confirmed in January, with F. Gary Gray enlisted as the director and movie title revealed to be the same as their debut album, "Straight Outta Compton." Casting also began in January, although we haven't heard anything about who has been tapped for the film until today.
According to The Wrap, none other than Ice Cube's son, O'Shea Jackson Jr., has been cast to play the part of his father in "Straight Outta Compton." Given his resemblance to his dad, this seems like a fitting choice.
Cube said in February he was trying to give O'Shea the part, "I've been trying to get that pushed along. Just wanna make sure that he's the best man for the job." Apparently Cube convinced the Universal executives that although O'Shea is new to acting, he can handle the task.
Word is that Eazy-E's son was also vying for the role of his dad, however it's possible it went to an unknown actor instead. The Wrap also reports that Universal could announce the full cast by the end of the week, so we will keep you posted.
Along with Ice Cube, Dr. Dre and Eazy-E's widow are producing "Straight Outta Compton." We will update you once the casting is confirmed by Universal.
[Update: More Cast Members Revealed]
While it was recently reported that O'Shea Jackson Jr. would be playing Ice Cube (who happens to be his father) in the upcoming N.W.A biopic, fans have been left guessing at who will fill the roles of the other members of the iconic group.
Today, more cast members have been revealed, with Marcus Callendar set to play Dr. Dre, and Jason Mitchell to take on the role of Eazy-E.
Dre's original choice for his younger self was Micheal B Jordan (known for his role of Wallace in The Wire), but the actor was already locked into the upcoming Fantastic Four movie.
While Jackson and Callendar are relative newcomers to the world of film, Mitchell has previously appeared in four movies, including 2012's Contraband with Mark Wahlberg.
Still no word on who'll be playing MC Ren. We'll keep you updated on any more casting choices.
