Back in January, high-fashion brand Chanel revealed that music wonderboy Pharrell Williams would become the first man to appear in one of their handbag ads. Although the worldwide release date isn’t upon us quite yet, WWD has obtained an early preview of the campaign, specifically the ads with Pharrell in them.
Skateboard P appears in the ads wearing a black Chanel jacket and the brand’s Gabrielle handbag in a music venue. He’s also wearing an impressive number of chains around his neck. Chanel’s head designer Karl Lagerfeld says the bag’s design was inspired by virtual reality goggles.
“It’s crazy,” Pharrell explained about starring in the campaign. “Who knew if you just follow what it is that you’re curious about, it may make sense for you one day – and in a major, major way. I just never dreamt that I would ever be considered in this way, and given all these opportunities.”
He also spoke on the Gabrielle bag, saying, “when I first started wearing it I didn’t have anything in it. I was just so excited to have it. But now I use it to carry my phone, and – you know – essential personal things.”
The campaign doesn’t only consist of print advertisements; Pharrell will be appearing in one of four short films that were shot for the campaign. The other three will feature the other stars of the campaign, Kristen Steward ,Cara Delevingne and Caroline de Maigret. Keep you eye out for those, which will debut on April 3 when the whole campaign launches.
