Flying Lotus announced Wednesday on Twitter that he is launching a film division of his forward-thinking independent music label Brainfeeder.
It all began last October, FlyLo explained, when he saw a humorous GIF (include below) of him interacting with Thom Yorke and realized that he could make these sorts of visuals himself. "I was fixated on this for a whole day and thought. Shit. I can make stuff like that," he tweeted.
Brainfeeder serves as the home of Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, The Underachievers, and numerous other genre-defying artists. Its first film signee is "Salad Fingers" animator David Firth. "[He] started teaching me animation. So he was the first person I signed," Flying Lotus wrote.
Given that FlyLo's music videos are as imaginative as his music, this move is both logical and exciting. Brainfeeder's first film "Royal," directed by FlyLo, will debut at the 2016 Sundance NEXT Fest in August. Read his announcement below.
