DMV trio Black Coal are back with a new mixtape: Ski Masks & Diplomas, their first full release since last November's THR-O-NE. The trio is comprised of Yung Heat, C.T., and Jayy Tu-Wize. They each have their unique rapping styles, but the whole tape rides along with a cohesive feel, and it's easy to see these guys have been rapping together for a long time.
Ski Masks & Diplomas shows us a nuanced view of the DMV, exploring the conflicting dichotomies that Black Coal have had to live with. The 11-track release is full of deep wordplay, conceptual experiments, and, most importantly, bars filled with raw emotion. The eclectic beats come from a range of producers including Penacho, Tone Jonez, and Kid Flash.
