This is pretty atrocious news, although it's one man's accusations against another, surfacing 37 years later-- it's hard to know where to land, but nonetheless it's nothing to take lightly.
Former New York State Democratic Committee member Ronald Savage has accused hip-hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa of molesting him, starting when he was 13-years old, in his new book "Impulse, Urges and Fantasies." According to Savage, Bambaataa (real name Kevin Donovan) forced Savage to perform oral sex on him, during the peak of Zulu Nation's popularity (a collective founded by Bambaataa), around 1979. Bambaata would have been 21 at the time.
These claims are being taken rather seriously, if only because of Savage's current clout-- he is currently a judicial delegate in the 12th Judicial District in the Bronx. During a recent radio show interview, the now 50-year old Savage spoke on the accusations, saying, "I was a kid when this happened. I wanted to be down with the in-crowd, not really understanding that what Bambaataa was doing to me was molesting me. I knew it was wrong. I had these feelings that were like, 'Yuck.'"
Savage will not be able to press charges on Bambaataa due to the statute of limitations. We'll update you if Bambaataa issues a response to the accusations.
